Beginning April 1, 2026, Colorado will implement new driver education requirements designed to improve safety for young drivers. Families with teens approaching driving age will want to plan ahead.
๐ What’s Changing?
Under the new law:
- Drivers under age 18 must complete a 30-hour driver education course before receiving a learner’s permit.
- Drivers ages 18–21 must complete either:
- a 30-hour driver education course, or
- a 4-hour Driver Awareness Program
before obtaining a permit or license.
These requirements make completing an approved driver education program mandatory for new drivers.
๐ฎโ๏ธ Driver Education in the North Denver Metro: TopCops Driving School
Serving families throughout the north Denver metro, TopCops Driving School offers state-approved driver education taught entirely by off-duty or retired police officers.
TopCops’ teen driver education program prepares students for the permit test and real-world driving through interactive lectures, discussions, games, and hands-on activities. Teens learn critical skills such as how to handle a tire blowout, change a tire, respond safely when pulled over, and make smart decisions behind the wheel.
Each session begins with a brief parent orientation, offering guidance on how to support teens as at-home driving instructors.
